The Norwalk softball team finished regular-season play with a tough assignment on Wednesday night, traveling to Waukee Northwest for a varsity doubleheader. And although the Class 4A third-ranked Warriors scored 13 total runs on 22 hits, they couldn’t contain the offense of the top-ranked team in Class 5A. Using a nine-run fifth inning in game one and a six-run fourth in game two, the Wolves swept Norwalk by scores of 15-9 and 8-4.

The Warriors led 7-2 after two innings and 8-5 in the top of the fifth in game one, but it was all Wolves the rest of the way. Northwest totaled 14 hits and took advantage of four Norwalk errors that led to four unearned runs. Carly Brewer took the loss, allowing 10 earned runs in 4 ⅓ innings. Leah Crick pitched the final 1 ⅔. Brewer led the Warrior hitting attack, going 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBI. Bailey Birmingham also homered and drove in three, going 2-for-4. Dani Peters was 2-for-3 with a double and one RBI and Cambry Livingston added a pair of singles.

The night cap was competitive until the Wolves plated six in the fourth inning to make it 8-1. Nyah Hulbert, Birmingham, Ava Garvey and Halie Karnatz had two hits each for Norwalk, including doubles by Hulbert and Karnatz. Crick took the loss, allowing eight hits and four earned runs in three-plus innings. Lillian Garvey also pitched three frames, allowing five hits and four unearned runs.

Waukee Northwest improved to 35-5 overall. Norwalk enters postseason play at 31-7. The Warriors will host Fort Madison or Keokuk in a 4A regional semifinal on Saturday at 7:00 p.m.
