Newton boys head track coach Chad Garvis has been named by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association as Iowa’s boys Track and Field coach of the year. One boys coach and one girls coach from all 50 states, plus the District of Columbia, are honored for their success during the spring. The United States Marine Corps presents the award on behalf of the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. The Association says the state winners are selected by a committee of experts from around the nation, based on their team’s performances throughout the outdoor track and field season. Factors considered included team score and placement at the state championships, margin of victory, performances against rankings, individual championships, and how their teams’ performances stacked up to previous years. Each state honoree receives a trophy from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, and is considered for the Association’s National High School Track and Field Coach of the Year award. That honor will go to one boys coach and one girls coach, with the recipients announced next week. Under Garvis, the Cardinal boys track and field team won the Class 3A title by scoring 60 points at the state track meet. Caden Klein won a gold medal in the 200-meter dash, and also helped the 4×200 relay team claim gold medals. The team also collected three second place finishes at the state meet.
