Newton head baseball coach Darin Tisdale says his five seniors did a good job of leading the sophomores and freshmen this summer, a group who saw considerable playing time this season. Creighton Andrew, Cade Bauer, Skyler Milheiser, and Derek Wermager were starters, while Conner Swihart could come in off the bench. Milheiser was the starting catcher for the first seven games before sustaining an arm injury that forced him to learn to bat left-handed, and only be used as a hitter. That led to four or five sophomores and freshmen starting the rest of the games for the Cardinals, and Coach Tisdale is proud of how the seniors supported their younger teammates.
“I applaud those seniors for not giving up or giving in and just going through the motions. They never really showed that throughout the practices or games that we had. They were always around to support the younger guys and show them how to be leaders, even in situations where the wins weren’t happening.”
The Newton baseball team had a 7-25 record this season. The two juniors on the roster who will be seniors next year are infielder and pitcher Gabe Otto, and catcher and pitcher Lane Rozendaal.
