A new ambulance is now in service in Newton. The $360,000 ambulance was acquired as part of the $5.2 million of General Obligation Corporate Purpose Bond revenue the City Council authorized back in April to pay for various projects, ongoing initiatives, and equipment and vehicle purchases. The new ambulance is designated as Medic 2 by the Newton Fire Department, and replaces the ambulance that caught fire in 2023. The City of Newton operates three ambulances, with a fourth reserved for times when maintenance is being done on the other units.
Before going out on its first call, the Newton Fire Department held a push-in ceremony for the new ambulance. The ceremony included Bagpiper Ron Husted, Chaplain Beau Church, and Fire Chief Jarrod Wellik. In honor of fire department crews in the 1800s, who had to push their horse-drawn equipment back into the firehouse, many fire departments hold a push-in ceremony when they put new fire trucks and ambulances into service.
