
There were many strong athletic performances by Newton High School Athletes during the 2024-2025 school year, and while many are included in our Top 10 countdown, plenty of others are worth mentioning. Here are some of the top moments that just missed the cut (in chronological order).
Newton Swimmer Finn Martin Claims Two Conference Titles
On February 1st, Finn Martin claimed two conference championships at the North Central Conference Swim Meet in Boone. Martin set a new conference record by seven seconds when he won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:44.49. Martin also won the 100-yard butterfly. He said he had a feeling it was going to be a good day.
“I felt good in warm-ups. So I was like, I feel like I am going to go fast today.”
Martin would end his swim season by defending his state title in the 50 yard freestyle and claiming a state championship in the 100 yard freestyle. .
Newton Wrestler Kent Montgomery Takes Conference Title At 106 Pounds
Freshman wrestler Kent Montgomery claimed the top spot at 106 pounds during the Little Hawkeye Conference Wresting Meet February 1st at Dallas Center-Grimes. He was 31-2 going into the meet, and won the conference title by pinning his opponent in his first match, and winning by technical fall in the championship match. Montgomery’s success prompted him to establish a lofty goal.
“I want to make it to state all four years and be consistent with that. It’s a hard thing to do, especially how young I am and wrestling older kids.”
Montgomery ended his wrestling season 39-6 after winning two matches at the State Wrestling Tournament.
Newton Bowler Gabbie Humphrey Competes In The Class 2A State Bowling Tournament
Newton Junior Gabbie Humphrey placed 26th out of the 32 bowlers at the Class 2A Girls State Bowling Tournament in Waterloo on February 25th. Humphrey collected 505 pins in her three game series, while the Individual State Champion from Decorah bowled a 693 series. Humphrey’s 185 pin first game at the state tournament was her best, and she followed that up with pin totals of 161 and 159. She said bowling at the state tournament is a lot different from the rest of the season.
“It’s different when you are not bowling with anyone else on your team. You just have a couple of coaches, so there’s no one really to completely relate to.”
Humphrey made this year’s state tournament February 17th by placing fourth at the qualifying meet in Newton at Cardinal Lanes.
Newton Golfer Jackson Price Wins Individual Boys Little Hawkeye Conference Golf Title
Newton sophomore Jackson Price shot a three under par 68 in the fourth and final Little Hawkeye Conference Meet at Westwood Golf Course May 12th to claim the 2025 Individual Little Hawkeye Conference Championship by three strokes. Price attributed an improved mental approach to the game compared to his freshman season, for his improved results..
“I think I have improved a little bit in being mentally stable throughout the round. To now get in my head when something goes wrong. I think I have been able to maintain a balance all 18 holes to create a better score.
Price’s season ended a week later with the Class 3A District Meet at Waverly Municipal Golf Course. He was Newton’s top finisher in 15th, shooting a 79.
