
Norwalk’s list of Top 10 sports stories from the 2024-2025 school year has reached the Top 5. Today, we recognize some of the honorable mention moments.
Last fall, the Warrior volleyball team set a school record for wins, finishing 28-14. They won nine consecutive games leading up to a regional final loss at Pella.
The Norwalk freshmen trio of Olive DeRocher, Gabby Drymon and Grace Wetzeler qualified for the Class 4A Girls State Cross Country Meet in Fort Dodge. The Warriors placed fourth as a team at the State Qualifying Meet, narrowly missing a state meet berth.
In boys golf, Grady Sigrist qualified for the State Tournament and placed 50th in Class 4A to cap an excellent senior season. The Warriors broke their 18-hole school record with a 286 at Beaver Creek.
Competing for Des Moines Lincoln, Norwalk sophomore swimmer Mallory Betts anchored the Rails’ 200-yard medley relay to 17th place at the State Meet.
Moving on to the winter sports season, Norwalk junior Katie Liedtke became the second state qualifier in the three-year history of the girls wrestling program. She finished 0-2 at the Class 2A state meet and had a season record of 28-19.
A senior-laden Warrior girls bowling team compiled an overall dual record of 9-2.
And in spring sports, the Norwalk girls track team qualified six events for State. Freshman Elle Hatlevig brought home a fifth-place medal in the high jump.
The Warrior girls soccer team had another outstanding season end in heartbreak, falling to Bondurant-Farrar in a 2A regional final that came down to penalty kicks. They finished 11-4-3 overall.
Foreign exchange student Ivanna Sherstiuk earned the Norwalk girls tennis team’s first outright Little Hawkeye Conference championship since 2014, winning the Flight 1 singles bracket. She was later a Class 2A state alternate after placing third in regionals.
For the boys tennis team, sophomore Eli Mills and junior Lane Juergens rallied back against Pella Christian to win the Flight 2 doubles bracket at the conference meet. Norwalk finished second in the LHC Tourney and was recognized as the regular season dual champion.
