A Bloomfield Woman has been charged with felony theft in Knoxville after allegedly stealing Native American artifacts.
According to court records, on April 4th, Knoxville Police received a report of stolen artifacts from a Knoxville address. The resident had died and his daughter inherited his property, and she reported that part of her father’s Indian artifact collection, a display case containing 15 tomahawk heads was missing when she went to pick them up. The criminal complaint states the officer knew which case she reported, because it was captured on his body cam during the death investigation, with Misty Bowman holding the collection in front of him.
The officer interviewed Bowman on April 15th, and she affirmed living in the trailer located at the address after her boyfriend died for a few days, but denied stealing artifacts. An officer allegedly observed images on Bowman’s daughter’s social media showing a display case with loose artifacts. A search warrant was attained for the daughter’s address in Ottumwa and during its execution , a male witness answered the door and stated that Bowman brought the items to the Ottumwa residence. The witness said that Bowman claimed that she had received the artifacts from her boyfriend and wanted to put them at the residence for safe keeping.
The witness then turned over the case of 15 artifacts, plus a bag with five more artifacts the witness described Bowman bringing to his residence to store. The stolen artifacts were appraised and their value was determined to be $1,850 by an expert. Bowman was picked up on a warrant and is charged with Second Degree Theft, a Class D Felony.
