Newton boys swimmer Finn Martin achieved the #2 sports moment in our top 10 countdown from Newton High School during the 2024-2025 school year. On February 15th, Martin became a three-time state swimming champion after winning two championships at the state swim meet in Iowa City. He defended the state title he earned a year earlier in the 50-yard freestyle, winning the event again in a school record and Automatic All-American Status time of 20.19. Martin then claimed the state championship in the 100-yard freestyle with another Automatic All-American Status time of 44.64. The junior also led off the 200-yard freestyle relay team with Ethan Comer, MacK Copeland and Caleb Punt. The foursome finished 10th with a season best and new school record time of 1:27.54. At the conclusion of the state meet, Martin was very pleased with his performance, as well as his teammates.

“I thought, like just myself and my teammates, I’ve seen a lot of improvement. I am really glad with how everybody’s grown and done this season. It’s been pretty cool.”

Martin’s accomplishments at the state swim meet made him part of a three-way tie for Swimmer of the Year. As a team, Newton placed 17th with 58 points. Martin will be a senior this season, and has already signed a letter of intent to swim at the University of Notre Dame after high school.
