The newest fall sport on Eagle Lane will begin their season Friday morning, as the girls tennis team will compete in a triangular at Centerville.
The Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union announced last August that girls tennis would move from the spring to the fall this school year, in an effort to reduce scheduling congestion. The Eagles, who went 10-2 this past spring, have several new athletes out for the sport this year. Pella Christian has 45 girls set to compete this fall across the varsity and junior varsity levels, with many spring sport athletes and freshman going out for the sport for the first time this year. With official practices beginning this past Monday, Eagles head coach Danielle Stubbs says that practices have largely been trying to emphasize the basics, but that the girls won’t be expected to be tennis experts come tomorrow.
“Our first few meets, they’re not going to be expected to know every little thing about tennis. Tiebreakers can be tough and scoring and some of these things, and it’s okay, we’re going to make some mistakes and we’re going to learn from them and that’s part of the process.”
The Pella Christian girls tennis team will begin the triangular Friday at 9 am against the hosts, Centerville, before taking on Burlington Notre Dame at 11 am.
