The Newton girls tennis season begins Monday and head coach Erick Zehr hopes some scheduling changes are made for next year. The Iowa High School Athletic Association and the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union jointly decided to move girls’ tennis to the fall this school year, to alleviate the crowded spring sports schedule. Due to the switch, Zehr notes that six of the varsity’s thirteen scheduled meets occur before Newton’s first day of school. He believes that takes some positive experiences away from his players.
“Hopefully they will look at it next year, and let a little more of the season be during the school year so the girls can have more fun. Showing off their uniforms at school and talking to their friends, having their names in the announcements when meets happen. That’s all part of the fun of high school sports.”
The Newton girls tennis team will have no home meets this season due to the installation of eight new tennis courts at Aurora Heights Park. Their first meet is Monday at Des Moines East.
