
The Newton girls tennis team opened the season at the Knoxville Invitational on Tuesday and placed second with 64 points, as Morgan Frehse claimed the Singles Championship. The junior was the #4 seed and won four matches, with only her semi-final win going to three sets. Frehse defeated Knoxville’s Abby Dunkin in the Championship in a pair of 4-2 sets. Newton’s other singles player, senior Brooke Sterling, was seeded 14th, and finished sixth after being sent to the consolation bracket with a second round loss to Dunkin.
In doubles play, senior Sloan Broderson and junior Kaetlin McPartlin placed 5th, after being seeded 15th. Seniors Ava Williams and Camryn Andrew were seeded 9th and were eliminated from the Invitational after losing their first two matches.
The Newton girls tennis team will play at Norwalk on Thursday.
