Dilapidated houses on four separate lots in Newton are gone, and the properties are now ready for new home construction. The home demolitions at 335 South 5th Avenue West, 427 North 3rd Avenue East, 306 East 8th Street South, and 509 East 9th Street North have been completed, according to Newton City Administrator Matt Muckler. The City of Newton purchased the rundown homes through the Dangerous and Dilapidated buildings program. D.W. Zinzer Company of Walford, Iowa won the demolition contract, and was paid a total of $75,515 to tear all four houses down. That is in addition to what the City of Newton paid to buy the properties. The now vacant lots are available for purchase through the City of Newton’s Community Development Department.
