One person is dead following an officer-involved shooting in Knoxville.

Police Chief Aaron Fuller released a statement about an incident that occurred at 11:10 p.m. on Thursday. The department responded to a domestic dispute in the 300 Block of S. Roche Street. Officers say they encountered a man attacking a woman. During the interaction, a Knoxville Police Officer fired his weapon, striking the male. Police say they rendered immediate medical care and contacted Knoxville Fire and Rescue. The man who was hit by gunfire was transported to a Des Moines-area hospital, but was pronounced dead from his injuries.

The female was transported to a local hospital and has since been released. The Knoxville Police Department says none of their personnel were injured.

A gas line at the home was ruptured, and the nearby area was evacuated. The department says there is no related threat and Alliant Energy has made repairs.

Chief Fuller has requested the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation to lead an officer-involved shooting investigation. DCI will forward their findings to the Marion County Attorney’s Office. Fuller says this could take several weeks to complete. He says the responding officers have been placed on critical incident leave.

The names of those involved will not be immediately released.

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office and Iowa State Patrol also assisted.
