The City of Newton is going to spend just over $33,000 to have 47 trees removed from Maytag and Woodland Parks, along with Union Cemetery. In updating the city’s tree GIS inventory this spring, city staff determined 22 trees in Maytag Park and 25 spread across Woodland Park and Union Cemetery need to be dropped, removed, and have their stumps grounded down. Bids were sought, and two have been approved by the Newton City Council. DW Tree Service in Newton will clear the 25 trees from Woodland Park and Union Cemetery for $17,450. The 22 trees at Maytag Park will be removed by Top Saw Tree Service of Kalona for $15,650. Bond revenue will pay for these projects. City staff notes over the last several years, the tree population in Newton’s parks has dwindled considerably due to the 2020 derecho, the 2022 tornado, and natural tree loss.
