The Newton volleyball team started the season 3-0 by winning their home invitational on Tuesday. The Cardinals opened the event by defeating PCM two sets to one. Newton took the first set 21-16, lost the second set 13-21, and got the win by outscoring the Mustangs 15-10 in the third set. Isabelle Rawlins led the Cardinal offense against PCM with 17 assists and two kills. Morgan Frehse added 12 kills. Defensively, Camryn Klein contributed nine digs and Quincy Davidson seven. Newton head coach Heidi Woollums said she was proud of the fight her young team showed against the Mustangs, and that winning a three-set match is huge early in the season.

Newton then defeated Saydel 21-10 and 21-13. Rawlins served up four aces and contributed another 16 assists and one kill in the win, with Addyson Cibula adding 7 kills.

In the last match of the night, the Cardinals dominated Hoover 21-6, 21-3. Klein had eight aces and Rawlins 14 assists. Ellie DeVries led the team in kills with 4. Coach Woollums says the team looks to continue this type of play into the Lynnville-Sully Quad, which is their next competition on Thursday.
