The Newton girls swimming and boys and girls cross-country teams opened the season on Thursday, while the girls tennis and volleyball teams continued to work through their schedules with matches as well. 

It was a first place finish for the girls swim team at the Williamsburg Triangular. Newton had 97 points, while Williamsburg finished with 54 and Tipton with 17. Newton swimmers won nine of the eleven events. 

The Cardinals won the 200-yard Medley Relay (2:00.57), the 200-yard Freestyle Relay (1:47.17), and the 400-yard Freestyle Relay (4:15.28). Harper Barton took first place in the 50-yard Freestyle (25.13) and the 100-yard Freestyle (54,92). Reid McCloud won the 500-yard Freestyle (5:38.11) and the 100-yard Backstroke (1:04.52). Temple Barton finished first in the 200-yard Freestyle (2:08.6) and Julia Nedder won the 100-yard Butterfly (1:13.02).

The Cardinals girls cross-country team finished second out of eight teams at the Bobcat Early Bird Invitational in Marshalltown. They had three top ten finishers, with Audrey Muckler taking second place (20:27.4), Alexis Sorensen third (20:53.4), and Talia Friedman eighth (22:46.5). The boys cross-country team finished fourth in an eleven-team field, with two top tens. Lance Zaabel was fifth (17:41.8) and Cooper Lenz was sixth (17:57.2). 

The Newton volleyball team went 2-1 at the Lynnville-Sully Quad. The Cardinals opened the night by defeating Lynnville-Sully in straight sets, 21-17 and 21-9. Morgan Frehse had 13 kills while Isabelle Rawlins contributed 20 assists and 7 digs. Quincy Davidson also had 7 digs. The Cardinals then lost to PCM in two sets, 21-13 and 22-20. Frehse had 10 kills and Rawlins 13 assists. Camryn Klein had the most digs with 10. Newton ended the night with a straight set 21-10, 21-8 victory over Twin Cedars. The Newton volleyball team is now 5-1. 

The Newton girls tennis team lost at Pella 11-0. In the closest singles matches, Camryn Andrew lost 6-3, 6-2. Mackenzie Clark dropped her match 6-2, 6-3, and Ava Williams won four games in her 6-2, 6-2 loss. In the doubles matches, Kenzly Brant and Haylie Milheiser lost their first set 7-5, and the second set 6-0. Andrew and Williams were beaten 6-3, 6-1. The Newton girls tennis team is now 1-5. 

The Newton boys and girls cross country teams and the Cardinal volleyball team will return to action Tuesday with cross country competing at the Williamsburg Invitational and the volleyball team at Indianola. The Newton girls tennis team will be at Pella Christian Thursday, while the girls swim team also has a meet at Grinnell College.
