Ribble’s Triple-Double Highlights Final Day of Home Volleyball Tournament

Central College senior volleyball player Makayla Ribble had 18 assists, 10 kills, and 12 digs during the team’s four-set win over Bethany Lutheran College (Minn.) Saturday afternoon. The Dutch (2-2) started the day with a 21-25, 25-16, 25-16, 28-26 loss to Calvin University (Mich.), before taking down Bethany Lutheran 27-25, 25-20, 18-25, 25-15. Ribble recorded the first trouble-double of her career against the Vikings, leading the team in assists. Leslie Snow had 14 kills and Colleen Kenney had 20 digs to lead the team in those categories. In the loss to Calvin, Snow had 13 kills, Ribble had 20 assists and 14 digs and Kaitlyn Mumm had three blocks. The Dutch welcome Knox College (Ill.) to P.H. Kuyper Gymnasium for a 7 p.m. dual on Tuesday.

Dutch Take Advantage of Opportunities in Men’s Soccer Win

A pair of penalty kicks propelled the Central College men’s soccer team to a 3-2 win over Blackburn University (Ill.) Saturday afternoon.

Central (1-0) got the scoring started with a Zach Holtan goal in the 17th minute off an assist from Nate Lampe. The Battlin’ Beavers (0-1) leveled the score in the 50th minute, but Spencer Taylor’s penalty kick goal in the 63rd minute put Central back in front. A handball in the box yielded the penalty kick try. Central got another penalty kick opportunity in the 65th minute after a foul in the box, and Cooper Collins had his initial volley stopped, but he scored after the ball got away from the goalkeeper following the save. Blackburn added another goal in the 70th minute, but Central held on for a 3-2 victory. Morgan Finkenbinder secured the win in goal.

Central travels to Greenville University (Ill.) for a 3 p.m. match on Monday.

Dutch Women Take Season-Opening Tennis Win over Monmouth

The doubles point was the difference for the Central College women’s tennis team in a 4-3 win over Monmouth College (Ill.) Saturday afternoon.

Playing a lineup with three freshmen making their debut, the Dutch (1-0) took two out of three doubles matches to start with a 1-0 lead. Madi Whalen and Millie Wolfe won 6-1 at No. 2 doubles, while Madison Price and Liv Allely won 7-5 at No. 3. The two teams split the six singles matches, with Central getting wins from Wolfe at No. 2 6-4, 6-4, Kennedy Harms at No. 3 6-0, 6-2, and Allely at No. 5 6-1, 6-0. A majority of Central’s returning starters competed at a tournament at Truman State University (Mo.), but results were not available as of Saturday night.

The Dutch open the American Rivers Conference season Tuesday at Buena Vista University at 4 p.m.

Central Women in Eighth at Kohawk Classic Golf Tournament

After the first 18 holes Saturday, the Central College women’s golf team is in eighth place with a score of 337 at the Kohawk Classic. Playing at the par-72 Pheasant Hill Golf Course, Allie Pfantz recorded a 77 and sits in ninth place for the Dutch. Mickey Martens is 20th after surging on the back nine, shooting an even-par 36 to finish with an overall score of 80. Also in the Central lineup, Chloe Sundet shot 87 and is in 49th, Bella Keaveney shot 93 and is in 59th and Karlee Koehler shot 94 and is in 63rd. The two-day tournament wraps up Sunday with 18 more holes at Pheasant Ridge Golf Course.

Dutch Men Start Slow in Kentucky Golf Tournament

Playing 36 holes Saturday, the Central College men’s golf team is in 12th out of 19 teams at the Transylvania Fall Invitational.

Central shot rounds of 304 and 306, placing them in a three-way tie for 12th place. Bautista Valeiras had the low score for the Dutch on the day, nearly breaking par in the first round with a 73 and finishing at 73-78–151 for the day. Blake Wynn is in 41st place after shooting 78-74–152. Also in action for Central, Maison Brandt is 48th (76-77–153), Carter Yurgae is in 61st (78-77–155) and Crew Klingner is in 87th (77-86–163)

Central concludes its trip to Kentucky with 18 more holes today.

Central Triathlon Squad Strong in Season Opener

In their first triathlon of the season, Central College rolled to a 50-11 dual victory over Coe College Saturday morning.

Starting at 6:30 a.m. at Roberts Creek outside of Pella, the competitors swam 212 meters before completing a 12-kilometer bike and 3.5-kilometer run. Central’s top-six athletes finished before any Kohawks completed the course. Adeline Koritz was the individual champion in a time of 54 minutes, 21 seconds. She tied for the fastest swimming split (11 minutes, 16 seconds) and fastest bike/run segment (43:05). Luci Laidlaw was the runner-up in a total time of 55:05. Grace Benson was third for the Dutch in 58:01, after sharing the fastest swim split with Koritz.

Central will next complete in a splash and dash in Clear Lake, Indiana hosted by Trine University on Thursday, September 18th.
