The Newton boys and girls cross-country teams both finished fourth at the Williamsburg Raider Invitational on Tuesday, while the Cardinals volleyball team lost a three-set Little Hawkeye Conference match against Indianola. 

Cooper Lenz and Lance Zaabel were top-ten finishers for the boys cross-country team. Lenz finished 4th (17:18.4), while Zaabel placed 8th (17:36.0). The rest of Newton’s runners included Levi Zaabel in 25th (19:22.2), Drew Lamont in 35th (19:48.5), Abel Aldama in 42nd (20:24.3), Noah Tremel in 43rd (20:29.8), and David Wickett in 57th(21:37.9). 

The Cardinal girls were led by Audrey Muckler (20:41.7) and Alexis Sorenson (20:49.1), who finished in 9th and 10th places respectively. Talia Friedman was 21st (22:26.1), Alivia Kingery finished 24th (23:06.9), Sarah Malow placed 37th (24:42.2), Ashlyn Wallace was 42nd (25:08.5), and Meghan Trout took 45th (25:36.1). The Cardinal volleyball team dropped their conference match at Indianola in straight sets of 25-13, 25-14, and 25-20. Team leaders in the match for Newton included Morgan Frehse with 14 of the team’s 21 kills, and ten of the team’s 33 digs. Isabelle Rawlins had all 19 of the team’s assists, while Quincy Davidson and Camryn Klein each had one service ace. The Newton girls volleyball team is now 5-2, and next competes at the Grandview Christian Triangular in Des Moines on Thursday.

The Cardinals boys and girls cross-country teams are off until Tuesday, when they compete at the Grinnell Cross-Country Invite at Ahrens Park.
