The Pella Christian girls tennis team swept Newton 11-0 Tuesday afternoon, while the volleyball squad went 2-0 at their home triangular against Pleasantville and Davis County.

The Eagles girls tennis squad dominated their match against the Cardinals, dropping just two of the 24 sets played throughout the contest. In singles play, Ava Breems picked up a 6-0, 6-1 victory at #1, Trinley Gibson won 6-0, 6-3 at #2, and Lexi Branderhorst won 6-1, 6-0 at #3. Rounding out the singles lineup, Chloe Nikkel was victorious 6-1, 6-1 at #4, Kate Braafhart won 6-3, 6-3 at #5, and Elsa Breems earned a 6-2, 6-2 victory at #6. In doubles action, Ava and Lexi pulled out a hard fought 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 victory at #1, Trinley and Chloe won 6-3, 6-2 at #2, Kate and Elsa won 6-1, 7-5 at #3, Ava Nikkel and Clair Van Wyngarden won 6-1, 6-0 at #4, and Reagan Rus and Morgan Sheredy won 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 at #5. With the win, the Eagles improved to 7-1 overall on the season and 5-1 in Little Hawkeye Conference play.

The Eagles volleyball team opened their home invitational with a 25-20, 25-21 victory over Davis County, before closing it out with a 25-9, 25-14 win over Pleasantville. Head coach Andrea Kacmarynski says many girls have had to step into new roles this season, and that she has been encouraged how they have handled those challenges early in the season.

“We’ve had a lot of learning experiences and then applied those into practice and so I’m loving the way things are working out now and we’re just going to keep learning and building.”

Kacmarynski adds that despite a 1-5 start to the season, confidence played a big factor in helping the squad go 3-0 this week and pull within a game of a .500 record.

“Yeah, I think we play with a lot of confidence, even when we’re behind, it feels like we’re ahead because we play with a lot of confidence and we control our controllables.”

The Pella Christian girls tennis team concludes regular season play on Monday with a road match at Pella at 4:15 pm, while the volleyball team is back on Eagle Lane on Tuesday for their home Little Hawkeye Conference opener against Newton at 7:15 pm.
