In a game that followed an almost identical script to last week, the Pella High football team kept its unbeaten start to the season in tact with a 10-3 win at North Scott last night in a game heard live on 92.1 KRLS.
Pella struck first with a 29-yard Nile Roe field goal midway through the first quarter, then held that lead until just before halftime when the Lancers tied it on a short field goal of their own.
It was stuck at 3-3 until the fourth quarter, when the Dutch finally got some much needed field position, and they took advantage by driving 46 yards, all on the ground, capped off by an Emmanuel Diers one-yard leap into the end zone.
Coach Ben Bollard’s defense came up with one last stop, and the offense iced it with another clock eating driving, finally kneeling out the last two minutes.
“The game had a semifinal kind of a feel to it with the size of the guys and the contact that you’re hearing on the sidelines and how both teams were dialed in. That game had a playoff atmosphere and I’m super excited for our guys and our team.”
The Pella defense has only allowed 13 points through the first 12 quarters of the season, and last night, North Scott mustered just 115 yards of offense. The Dutch got 107 yards rushing from Diers on 22 carries, with 64 of those yards coming on 11 fourth quarter runs.
Pella is 3-0 on the season and will prepare for a state championship rematch next Friday at home against North Polk. The Comets scored a walk-off 38-37 win last night over ADM in overtime.
