The Newton Cardinal football team scored three touchdowns in the third quarter and added another early in the fourth quarter to pull away from Bondurant-Farrar in Bondurant on Friday night, in a game heard live on kniakrls.com. KRLS3. The Cardinals won 48-13, but only led 20-13 at halftime. The Bluejays received the 2nd half kick-off, and fumbled on their second play from scrimmage. Newton recovered at the Bondurant 24-yard line. Four plays later Caden Klein threw a five-yard touchdown pass to Isaiah Hansen, which made the score 27-13 after the successful point after kick. That touchdown seemed to get the Cardinal offense going. On Newton’s next possession, which amounted to one play, Klein scored on a 42-yard run. Klein then ended Newton’s third possession of the quarter with a 27-yard touchdown pass to Finn Martin, which capped a three-play 70-yard drive. Newton’s final score came with ten minutes left in the game, as Hansen ran into the end zone from 20-yards out.

The Cardinals scored on their first two possessions of the game on drives of 64-yards and 68-yards, and on a 74-yard drive early in the second quarter. Bondurant-Farrar’s two scoring drives late in the first quarter and midway through the second quarter were 11 plays and 74-yards, and 12 plays covering 67-yards. Newton head coach Andy Swedenhjelm believes the 14-0 lead the team enjoyed just five minutes into the game, may have caused the players to let up some.

“We jumped out to a fast start, and I think our guys let off the gas pedal a little too early and needed some reminders at halftime of how we need to play.  They came out and played really hard, and I’m really proud of how we played in the second half.”

The Cardinals had just over 400-yards of total offense, while the Bluejays had just over 200-yards. Bondurant-Farrar is now 0-3 while Newton is 2-1. The Cardinals will host Indianola for homecoming next Friday night at 7 p.m. in a game that can be heard live on KRLS3, with pregame coverage at 6:30 p.m.
