Spencer Waugh has officially announced that he will run for Iowa House District 21.
The district includes Indianola, Knoxville, Milo, Lacona, Sandyville, and parts of rural Warren and Marion counties.
“We must find ways to make state government work for the average Iowan again. As a teacher with experience guiding students to see both sides of an issue, I understand that our solutions are rarely found exclusively from one party. We must start working together.”
Strengthening schools, economic development, and finding ways to keep graduates in the state are all top priorities for Waugh.
Spencer has spent over 25 years developing his policy expertise through coaching debate. He led the Indianola High School team to two State Championships and the Simpson team to six National Team titles, most recently in 2023.. He currently serves as an Associate Dean at Simpson College where he works with exploring students, helping them choose majors, and he leads the graduate programs and the Simpson Online division.
According to a release from Waugh, “Spencer hopes to be a champion for Iowa and for Iowa’s families. He believes a focus on high paying jobs will keep young people in our state. Small businesses are a driver of our economy, and more must be done to encourage economic growth. As an advocate for Iowa schools, Spencer believes no child can learn on an empty stomach. He is also deeply concerned about improving access to mental health care, particularly in rural communities. He looks forward to working across the aisle to deliver results for the constituents in Marion and Warren counties.”
A kick-off event will be held in Indianola on Tuesday, September 23rd from 5pm – 6:30pm at West Hill Brewing Company, 219 W Salem. The event is open to the public. A kick-off event will be held in Knoxville on October 2nd at the Sprint Car Hall of Fame and Museum from 5pm – 6:30.
