Two new candidates and two incumbents have filed nomination papers to run for Mayor and City Council in Newton. Thursday was the filing deadline for candidates to get their name on the November 4th ballot. Potential candidates could still conduct write-in campaigns. Current At-Large Council member Randy Ervin filed to run for Mayor, while Second Ward Council member Melissa Dalton is running to keep her seat. Jeff Holschuh has filed to run for the At-Large Council seat Ervin currently holds, while Amy Roth is running in the Fourth Ward to replace Steve Mullan. Mullan first served on the Newton City Council in 2005, and was appointed on July 1st of last year, to take the seat Vicki Wade vacated.

Newton Mayor Evelyn George announced in late July that she would be serving only one term, and not run for re-election this November. Her decision was based on her desire to have more time to travel with her husband. In November 2023, she defeated Council member Ervin by just 13 votes. While Newton’s Mayoral election occurs every two years, City Council members are elected to four-year terms.
