The new tennis courts at Newton’s Aurora Park have a tentative opening date of mid-June. The project is funded jointly by the City of Newton and the Newton School District. It exceeds $1 million and includes resurfacing the six previous courts, and adding two additional courts and new lighting. Newton City Administrator Matt Muckler says all the paving has been completed and the light pole bases for the new light poles will be installed this week. He notes the high school tennis teams will get a big benefit from having the two additional courts.
“They have eight courts that allow them to play at one location, instead of having to divide up the varsity and junior varsity between Aurora Park and Maytag Park.”
It was hoped the project could be completed this year, so the courts could be used for the Spring 2026 Boys Tennis season. But Muckler says the project has encountered many hurdles, including unanticipated field conditions requiring additional problem-solving and negotiations with a neighboring property taking significantly longer than expected. According to Muckler, the City has not been able to close on the additional 10 feet of land being acquired from the property owner to the west, due to issues with obtaining a mortgage/lien release from the current owner’s mortgage company. The Newton City Administrator also notes the pavement has to cure for 30 days before the acrylic surface can be applied to the tennis courts. Additionally, the temperature has to be 55 degrees or above for 72 continuous hours in order to apply that acrylic surface. Given that, it’s estimated the contractor will not be able to apply the acrylic surface until late May or early June of next year. Once that’s done, poles and nets will be installed, and any remaining punch list items will be completed.
