A Prairie City man listed as homeless by the Prairie City Police Department has accepted a plea bargain in his felony theft case. Twenty-four-year-old Dallas Scott Smithart is accused of selling a stolen cellphone at a kiosk at the Newton Walmart on August 19th. Prairie City Police say the phone was stolen from an Ottumwa woman at Bison Park. Smithart was originally charged with 2nd degree theft, a class D felony. On Tuesday, he entered a guilty plea to a reduced charge of 4th degree theft, a serious misdemeanor. District Associate Judge Steven Holwerda accepted the plea agreement, and scheduled Smithart’s sentencing for October 21st. The Prairie City man is currently free on a $5,000 bond he posted August 25th.
