It was Newton that spoiled Pella’s homecoming festivities, as the Dutch fell to the Cardinals 35-33 in a Class 4A District 4 showdown heard live on 92.1 KRLS.

Turnovers were the name of the game as the Dutch nearly doubled the offensive yardage of their rivals, but Newton would score 21 of their 35 points off of giveaways, including a critical fumbled snap just before halftime that gave the road team a lead they wouldn’t lose.

Pella found their deep passing attack, scoring three times off of plays longer than 40 yards, including a pair from Emmanuel Diers. The running back helped the Dutch find a creative way to score late, with a lateral to Rex Rhamy on a punt return giving the home team a chance late, but Newton would recover the onside kick try to seal the victory.

The Dutch fall to 4-1 overall and 1-1 in the district, they travel to Oskaloosa next week.
