Newton head football coach Andy Swedenhjelm says after Friday’s 35-33 win in Pella last Friday night, he told his players to appreciate everything that comes with this run for the district title. But he also cautioned them that there’s still more work to be done.
“The number one thing we talked about was embracing the moment. This is what high school football and high school sports are all about. Having a big-time homecoming game, rivalry game, packed house, great environment, highly ranked teams, this is the stuff that 90% of high school athletes don’t even get to experience. So embrace that moment, but at the same time we have to get ready to play another good team next week.”
The Newton Cardinals travel to Tiffin this Friday night, to take on the 3-3 Clear Creek Amana Clippers.
Clear Creek Amana is 1-1 in district play after a 35-13 Homecoming win over Marion Friday. The Cardinals are 5-1 and are currently tied with Grinnell atop the Class 4A District 4 standings at 2-0. The Cardinals and Tigers will play each other in Newton on Friday, October 17th. Hear the Cardinals play live every Friday this fall on the KRLS3 stream.
