The Jasper County Master Gardener Program area just west of the Newton DMACC Campus Building is going to be expanding. The Master Gardener Program is operated through the Jasper County Iowa State University Extension Office, which is in the DMACC Campus Building. Carol Camp is the program coordinator, overseeing 57 active Master Gardeners that are 16 years old or older and work on local projects. Camp says they’ll soon get to work on different horticulture gardens that are going to be added close to their vegetable garden.

“The surrounding area is going to have a variety of smaller educational horticultural gardens. So different kinds of flower gardens. We’ll also show different types of landscaping ideas for the community.”

Camp says the Master Gardener’s vegetable garden has been active for about seven years, and has produced over 14,000 pounds of produce that has been distributed to residents throughout Jasper County through the food pantry at the Newton Salvation Army.
