The Newton City Council has passed the first reading of a new ordinance that prohibits engine braking, except for in emergency situations. Commercial truck drivers sometimes use engine brakes to slow down to reduce wear and overheating on the brakes and to improve fuel economy, but these brakes are very loud. Third Ward Newton City Council representative Stacey Simbro lives near the interstate and the east exit by Iowa Speedway, and has heard complaints about the engine braking sound.

“I have several residents that will be tickled to death to hear that this was actually brought up. I know there are difficulties in enforcing these ordinances because you have to catch them in the act, but I understand there may be technology out there that can be helpful down the road, if we get to that point. But it is important. I live close enough that yes, there are nights I hear this.”

City Administrator Matt Muckler says complaints have also come from along East 31st Street North, which is on the northeast edge of town. The penalty for violating the ordinance would be a fine, plus applicable court costs and fees. The Newton City Council must vote on and approve the proposed ordinance at least two more times before it’s enacted.
