NCMP Aquagirls Claim Little Hawkeye Conference Championship

The Newton Colfax-Mingo Pella Aquagirls claimed the Little Hawkeye Championship Tuesday at the  Indianola Wellness Campus.The Aquagirls won ten of the eleven varsity events and accumulated 571 points. Oskaloosa was 127 points behind in second while Indianola finished third. Harper Barton placed first in the 100-yard freestyle (54.93) and the 100-yard breaststroke (1:09.84). Reid McCloud won the 200-yard freestyle (2:03.76) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:33.02). Tori White also won two individual events, taking first place in the 200-yard individual medley (2:25.96) and the 100-yard backstroke (1:03.23). Julia Nedder contributed a win in the 100-yard butterfly (1:09.53). Nedder, Emalee Weuve, Kimberlee Miller, and Alexa Van Maanen finished first in the 200-yard medley relay (2:06.74), while the team of Temple and Harper Barton, McCloud, and White finished first in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:44.64). The Barton’s, Van Maanen and White added another win in the 400-yard freestyle relay (4:00.42). The NCMP Aquagirls next compete in the eight-team North Central Conference Swimming and Diving Meet at the Grinnell College Natatorium on Thursday.

Newton Volleyball Season Ends at Bondurant-Farrar

The Newton Volleyball team had their season come to an end in the first round of the Class 4A Region 5 tournament Tuesday, falling to Bondurant-Farrar in four sets. The Bluejays took the first two sets 25-14, 25-5, but the Cardinals fought back and avoided the sweep by winning the third set 25-23. From there, Bondurant-Farrar took control and won the fourth set 25-10. Morgan Frehse led Newton with 13 kills, 6 digs, and an ace. Isabelle Rawlins contributed 22 assists, 7 digs, and a kill. Senior Olivia Bell led the team in digs with 9, while senior Merissa Schiebel added 8 digs while only playing three sets. The Newton volleyball team ends the season with a 10-16 overall record. 

Newton Cross Country Competes At State Qualifying Meet in Pella Today

The Newton boys and girls cross country teams compete in a state qualifying meet today at the Central College Cross Country Course in Pella. The Cardinal boys and girls will run against athletes from 12 other schools. Among the boys teams in attendance are four ranked in the top-20 of Class 4A including #2 Pella, #6 Clear Creek-Amana, #10 ADM, and #18 Carlisle. The girls race also features four top-20 ranked teams in Class 4A girls including #1 Pella, #9 Boone, #13 ADM and #19 Cedar Rapids Xavier. Newton junior boys runner Cooper Christy and sophomore girls runner Audrey Muckler both qualified for the state meet last season, and are hoping to make a return appearance to Fort Dodge this fall. The state qualifying meet at Central College today begins at 4:00 p.m.
