An expected $300,000-plus project that is now going out for bid, is expected to address flash flooding issues at Newton’s First Avenue East and East 12th Street intersection. Severe flash flooding threatened businesses in that area on May 21st of last year, as well as stranded vehicles and closed the street.
This past March, the Newton City Council approved a $247,000 contract with HR Green Incorporated of Johnston for design and phasing of stormwater improvements at the intersection. The project includes the creation of a stormwater detention pond on a city-owned lot just northeast of the First Avenue East and East 12th Street intersection, and the removal of a sanitary sewer siphon on North 6th Avenue East. The City of Newton is now accepting bids for this work, with a bid opening is scheduled for December 4th. The engineer’s estimate on the project is $330,445. Newton City Administrator Matt Muckler says First Avenue East Tax Increment Financing revenue and Water Pollution Control Funds will cover the cost.
