A Newton man accused of getting a gun and loading it during an argument with two other Newton residents pled guilty this week to two aggravated misdemeanor charges of assault with a dangerous weapon. The Jasper County Sheriff’s Department originally charged 29-year-old Johnathan Perales with two class C felony counts of intimidation with a dangerous weapon, and one class D felony of going armed with intent. District Court Judge Charles Sinnard accepted Perales’ guilty plea to the reduced offenses, and set his sentencing for December 8th. He’s currently free on a $10,000 bond.
Court documents say the confrontation occurred at Perales’ Hazel Avenue home on July 10th. According to the arrest report, Perales got the gun out of his vehicle, loaded it, and took steps toward the two victims before putting the weapon in his pocket.
