Residents who live north of Newton in fifteen homes on Iowa Street attended Tuesday’s Jasper County Board of Supervisors work session. Those residents have one way into Newton due to a permanent bridge closure, and it’s over a road that Iowa Interstate Railroad tracks cross. They have voiced concerns about having access to ambulance and fire service when Iowa Interstate Railroad trains blocked that railroad crossing. Jasper County Emergency Management Agency Director Jamey Robinson has been in contact with the railroad about keeping the amount of time the road is blocked by trains to a minimum. Tuesday, he also noted everyone is at risk of delayed emergency services if there’s a busy call volume at that particular time.
“That concern should be a concern on everyday calls, not just because a train is in the way. I have said it before in these meetings, even Newton Fire Department, a full-time department, they are busy. A house fire with guys on the roof. If another ambulance call comes in, someone’s help is going to be delayed until they can get another ambulance.”
During Tuesday’s work session, the Jasper County Board of Supervisors discussed funding options for putting in a new road that would provide another way into town. Those discussions will continue, as will exploration of other options.
