The Simpson football team earned a winning record after a field goal with under a minute to go led them to a win on the road against Nebraska Wesleyan 23-22 Saturday as heard live on 94.3 KNIA.
The Storm got off to a fast start, scoring on both of their first two drives on a Demarico Young rush and a Cole Staska receiving touchdown to quickly go ahead 14-0, however the Prairie Wolves would seize momentum with a pair of touchdowns in the second quarter as the Storm led 14-13 at the break. The hosts scored a touchdown in the third quarter to take a 19-13 lead after a failed two-point conversion, but Simpson answered with another Staska touchdown to reclaim a 20-19 lead.
With just 3:36 remaining, the Prairie Wolves drilled a 52-yard field goal to take a 22-20 lead, but the Storm would drive down and kick an Aiden Lanier go-ahead field goal with just :44 remaining to win the game.
Head coach Reed Hoskins said the graduating senior class has done so much to turn this program around after going 1-9 in their freshman year, and they set the standard for future Simpson teams to follow.
Staska led the team with 72 yards receiving, which gave him 2,000 in his career, and Young had 158 yards on the ground which gave him the American Rivers Conference rushing title and a 1,000 yard season. The Storm end the season with a 6-4 record, their first winning season since 2018.
