The Pella Community School District has been invited to join the Raccoon River Conference, and at Monday’s Pella School Board meeting, details will be given officially to the board about the potential transition.

Pella is currently a member of the Little Hawkeye Conference, and has been since 1996. The district has been working on expansion in that conference, aiming to form two different divisions. Des Moines Christian and Ames will join the LHC in 2026-27. Pella’s invitation for a new league would be for the 2027-28 academic year.

The Raccoon River Conference lost Carroll this year, and aims to bolster its group with the addition of the Dutch. The current eight schools in the league include ADM, Ballard, Bondurant-Farrar, Boone, Carlisle, Gilbert, North Polk, and Winterset. Based on average enrollment, the Dutch would be the 3rd largest school in the RRC — it’s currently 5th in the Little Hawkeye Conference behind DCG, Norwalk, Indianola, and Newton. However, Pella’s average travel in the new conference would be 66 miles per trip.

No formal action will be taken by the Pella School Board at Monday’s meeting, as the agenda item is for discussion only. The other eight RRC schools would need to have the majority of their boards approve the invitation to Pella before official consideration could be made, which would likely take place in January.
