Newton Police have filed seven charges, including three class D felonies, against a Newton man for an alleged domestic assault Friday that involved a handgun. 39-year-old Anthony John McGilvrey is facing felony counts of dominion or control of a firearm by a felon, 1st offense trafficking in stolen weapons, and escape from custody by a felon. Additional aggravated misdemeanor charges of assault while displaying a dangerous weapon and 1st offense domestic assault with use or display of a weapon have also been filed, along with simple misdemeanor counts of interference with official acts and possession of drug paraphernalia.

According to Newton Police, McGilvrey was involved in a physical altercation with a woman at his West 2nd Street South residence shortly after midnight Friday morning. In court documents, he’s accused of pulling the victim out of a car, hitting and kicking her, and threatening to commit suicide in front of her. Officers said the victim escaped the house and went to MercyOne Newton’s emergency room for help. When police went to McGilvrey’s residence, they seized a loaded handgun reported stolen from within Jasper County, and drug paraphernalia. McGilvrey was taken into custody later, and brought to the Newton Hospital for an evaluation. Newton police claim the 39-year-old briefly got out of his hospital room and ran, initially ignoring the officer’s orders to stop, before complying a few moments later.
