Upgrades to five traffic signals on First Avenue East have been completed, according to the City of Newton’s Public Works Department. ADA signals with an audible sound and pedestrian countdown heads have been added at East 8th, 12th, 14th, 19th, and 23rd Streets to help disabled pedestrians cross intersections. The City of Newton was awarded an Iowa Department of Transportation Traffic Safety Improvement Program to pay up to 100% of equipment costs for the upgrades. The project’s estimated cost was just over $102,000, but the final contract amount was $184,272.90.
