The Newton boys and girls basketball teams play their home openers tonight against Grinnell in games that can be heard live on kniakrls.com KRLS3, while the Cardinal boys and girls bowlers welcome Sigourney-Keota to Cardinal Lanes and the Newton boys swim team hosts Indianola.

Tonight’s game against Grinnell is the season opener for the Cardinal boys basketball squad. Head coach Jason Carter is looking for role players from last season to step up their scoring after losing three of the top four point producers from last year. Guards and team captains Caden Klein and Dawson Maki will guide the team, with expectations that juniors Qhjuan Coley and Grant Osby can increase their points per game production, along with sophomore Isaiah Slaughter. The Newton girls have already played one game. They defeated Chariton at Chariton 49-33 last Tuesday, outscoring the Chargers 28 to 12 after halftime. Junior guard Payton Carkhuff had 14 points for the Cardinals while sophomore forward Addyson Cibula added 13. Pregame coverage of tonight’s Newton basketball doubleheader starts at 5:45 on KRLS3.

After losing to Pella by just over 200 pins in their season opener last week, the Cardinal boys bowling team will look to get into the win column against Sigourney-Keota today. Meanwhile, the girls team will look to stay unbeaten and get their third win of the young season after dual wins at Marshalltown and at home against Pella. The Newton boys and girls teams host the Savages at 4:30 p.m.

The Newton boys swim team has their first home meet after placing 7th at the Ankeny Boys Swimming Sprint Invite last Tuesday. Senior Finn Martin, the defending State Champion in the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle, won both of those events. The Cardinals 200-yard freestyle and the 200-yard medley relays both placed 6th, and were the team’s only other top ten finishes. The swim meet against Indianola starts at 5:30 p.m. at the Newton YMCA.
