
The Newton basketball teams, girls bowling team, and the boys swim team all won home events Tuesday, while the boys bowling team suffered their second dual loss of the season.
The Cardinals boys and girls basketball teams both defeated Grinnell in a doubleheader heard live on the KRLS3 stream. The girls won 44-31 to improve to 2-0, while the boys won 66-59 to start the season 1-0. Payton Carkhuff was the leading scorer for the Newton girls with 12 points, while Sophie Coady added nine. Head coach Jake Bennett was pleased to see another good defensive effort by his squad, and was impressed how poised his players were against Grinnell’s press. Sophomore guard Isaiah Slaughter hit six three pointers to pace the Cardinal boys with 25 points. Junior Grant Osby also hit double figures with ten points. Head coach Jason Carter felt his inexperienced team did a good job grinding out the win and learned some things. The Cardinals boys and girls basketball teams will travel to Marshalltown Thursday.
The Newton boys and girls bowling teams split their home matches Tuesday night with Sigourney-Keota. The Cardinal girls defeated the Savages 2,482 to 1,689. Gabbie Humpfrey collected the most pins for Newton, with a two-game series of 437. Kelly Holmes collected 358 pins in her two games, while Mackenna Burns knocked down 313. The Newton boys lost to Sigourney-Keota 2,715 to 2,593. Jeremiah Killmer paced Newton with 411 pins, followed by Braden Baskerville’s 359 and Jarrett Sweeney’s 339. The Cardinal girls are 3-0 while the boys are 0-2, with the Newton Cardinal Invite coming up Saturday at Cardinal Lanes.
The Newton boys swim team won their first dual of the season Tuesday, beating Indianola at the Newton YMCA 87 to 75. The Cardinals won nine of eleven events. Individual winners for Newton included Finn Martin in the 200 SC Meter freestyle (1:57.27) and the 100 SC Meter butterfly (56.55), Ethan Comer in the 200 SC Meter individual medley (2:33.06) and the 100 SC Meter breaststroke (1:17.35), Caleb Punt in the 50 SC Meter freestyle (26.43) and the 100 SC Meter freestyle (1:01.10), and Hudson Meyer in the 100 SC Meter backstroke (1:08.78). The Cardinal boys swim team will host the Newton Invite Saturday at the Newton YMCA.
