Newton’s boys and girls bowling teams are home late this afternoon against Knoxville, while the Cardinal basketball teams visit Des Moines East, and the boys swim team travels to Boone for a triangular.

The Cardinal girl bowlers are unbeaten with three dual wins over Marshalltown, Pella, Sigourney Keota, and a victory in their home invitational Saturday. Last year’s state qualifier, Gabbie Humphrey, was Newton’s top bowler in each event. Her current average is 194. Knoxville’s girls bowlers are 0-3 with losses to Ballard, Oskaloosa, and Sigourney-Keota. 

The Cardinal boys are looking for their first win following Saturday’s fourth place finish in their invitational. They did reach a season high in pins, with a score of 2,746. Jeremiah Killmer led Newton with a two-game series of 409, placing him 11th. Braden Baskerville was the only other Cardinal in the top 20, finishing 16th with 401 pins. The Newton boys’ other losses were to Sigourney-Keota and Pella. The Knoxville boys bowling team is 0-2 after placing sixth at the Cardinal Invitational, and losing the day before at Ballard. The bowling begins at 4:30 p.m. at Cardinal Lanes.

The non-conference Newton boys and girls basketball games at Des Moines East start with the girls match-up at 6:15 p.m., with both games broadcast live on the KRLS3 stream beginning with pregame coverage at 6:00 p.m. The Cardinal girls’ are 2-2, and have lost two straight, at Marshalltown and Indianola. The team is averaging 38 points, 32 rebounds, and 18 turnovers per game. The leading scorer is sophomore Addyson Cibula, who’s averaging 10.5 points and 12 rebounds per game. Des Moines East is 0-3, averaging 17 points, 29 rebounds, and 27 turnovers a game. 

The Newton boys will also attempt to end a two-game losing streak. They are 1-2 after Friday’s 73-58 loss in Indianola. Senior Dawson Maki is averaging 13 points per game, while sophomore Isaiah Slaughter is close behind at 12.7 points. As a team, the Cardinal boys are currently averaging just over 52 points per game, while 2-0 Des Moines has averaged 54.5 points a game along with 22.5 rebounds and just 6.5 turnovers a game. 

The Newton boys swim team travels to Boone for a triangular that also involves Des Moines East. The Cardinal boys won their own invitational on Saturday, defeating Indianola, Oskaloosa, Grinnell, and Vinton-Shellsburg. The Cardinals accumulated 350 points and won ten of eleven events. Boone also won their invitational over four other teams on Saturday. Des Moines East suffered a close 83-80 loss to Ottumwa on Thursday, and is 1-2. The triangular swim meet at Boone begins at 5:30 p.m.
