
The Newton girls wrestling team won two of four duals and placed third in the Red Owens Holiday Classic at Southeast Polk on Saturday.
The Cardinals dropped their first match to Gilbert 48-18. Newton had three wins, all by fall, in the fourteen weight classes. Kylee Adams won at 115 pounds, while Shawna Foreman and Ashlyn VanManen claimed victories at 155 and 235 pounds. In their second match, the Cardinals defeated East Union 51-24. Newton had a win by decision at 110 pounds with Rosa Borja, while Kylee Adams and Haylee Adams won by falls at 115 and 120 pounds. East Union forfeited six other weight classes. Against Southeast Polk, Newton only picked up two wins, and lost 70-9. The wins were Kylee Adams by decision, and VanManen by fall. In the final match of the day, the Cardinals defeated Winterset 39-36. Borja won by decision, while Kylee Adams, Foreman, and Grace Guy at 170 pounds all recorded falls. The Cardinals also benefited from three Winterset forfeits.
Up next for the Newton girls wrestling team is a Tuesday trip to Norwalk for a dual with the Warriors.
