The Norwalk girls wrestling team placed sixth at Saturday’s West Des Moines Valley Invite while the Warrior boys wrestlers finished ninth at the Baltzley Invitational in Johnston.

The Norwalk girls scored 89 points and were once again led by freshman 100-pounder Hannah Schmitz, who placed first in her bracket. Schmitz was 3-0 with two pins and a technical fall, improving to 17-1 on the season. Kaylie Popiano and Madelyn Carroll placed third at 130 and 135 pounds, respectively, for the Warriors. Carroll went 4-1 with two wins by fall and Popiano was 3-1 with one pin. Also placing for Norwalk were Cennedy Allen (4th at 115), Merci Scholten (6th at 105), Margaret Evans (6th at 110) and Skylynn Finnegan (6th at 145).

The Norwalk boys totaled 76.5 points in their ninth-place finish at Johnston, competing in only nine out of 14 brackets. Madox Ward was the team’s top place-winner, taking fourth at 138 pounds. Troy Finnegan at 126 and Kale Wadle at 150 both placed fifth, Blake Stanford at 144 and Luke Palen at 215 placed sixth, and Asaiah Martinez at 132 and Izaac Jensen at 175 placed seventh.

Both Norwalk squads will host dual meets at 5:30 on Tuesday. The boys will wrestle Carlisle, Newton and Oskaloosa. The girls will face Newton and Oskaloosa.
