A long road trip to Gilbert turned into a pair of narrow wins on the road for the Pella basketball teams, as heard live on 92.1 KRLS Tuesday. The #14 Dutch girls pulled ahead late and held off the Tigers 50-47, while the boys fought to grab a lead late in the 3rd and hung on with a 60-50 victory.
In the opener, the teams traded the lead several times early before Pella pulled ahead, at one point, by as much as 12 points in the 2nd quarter. The home team kept pulling back, but the Dutch held off a scoring flurry in the 3rd quarter before ultimately giving up a small lead in the 4th. Mykaela Vincent found a basket-foul chance to take the final lead of the game, and Avery Parks hit four-of-four free throws late to force Gilbert to take a three-pointer at the buzzer, which they missed. Parks finished with 13 points, and Vincent had a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds.
Pella’s boys played from behind for most of the nightcap, with strong three point shooting by the Tigers allowing them to pull ahead by as much as 13 points in the 2nd quarter and nine in the 3rd. But the Dutch rallied each time, forcing several Tiger turnovers, fueled by seven steals. A dunk by Teagan Hoekstra in the 3rd quarter gave the Dutch a lead they ultimately wouldn’t let go of, which was compounded by three technical fouls called on the home team. Jack McGuire scored 19 points and Austin Schulte added 18.
The Dutch boys stay undefeated at 5-0 and the girls improve to 3-3; both head to Newton on Friday.
