Newton Fire Marshal Explains Role Beyond Inspections

The role of a fire marshal in Newton involves far more than checking buildings for code compliance, according to Fire Marshal Jacob Halferty.

Halferty said one of his primary responsibilities is overseeing the city’s commercial building inspection program, ensuring businesses and public spaces meet fire safety standards. That includes checking fire alarm systems, sprinklers, and extinguishers, as well as identifying and addressing potential hazards inside buildings. Jacob Halferty tells KRLS News the public often misunderstands the fire marshal’s role.

“Most people probably know the fire marshal for the commercial building inspection program. With that, it’s mainly making sure buildings are safe or certain fire appliances are working safely, like your fire alarm panels, sprinklers, and extinguishers. Some places may have more hazards than others so making sure they’re stored correctly.”

In addition to inspections, Halferty said the position includes fire prevention efforts, safety education and investigating the cause of fires when they occur. Those investigations determine whether a fire was accidental or criminal and often involve working with insurance companies. Halferty also oversees the fire department’s vehicle fleet, handling maintenance and repairs, and supervises the department’s hazardous materials team.

Halferty joined the Newton Fire Department in 2016 and was promoted to fire marshal in August 2023. He said the variety of responsibilities makes the job both challenging and rewarding.

Halferty said understanding the full scope of the fire marshal’s duties helps residents better appreciate how fire safety is maintained throughout the community.
