Warren County Nutrition is encouraging more residents to consider volunteering as the organization continues to deliver meals and wellness checks to seniors and residents with disabilities across the county.

Volunteer drivers play a key role in the program, delivering meals throughout Indianola, Norwalk, Carlisle, and rural areas during the late morning hours. Most routes take about an hour to complete, making it possible for volunteers to help even with limited availability. Warren County Nutrition Director Marty Davis tells KNIA News volunteers provide more than food to the people they serve.

“It’s not just a meal; it’s a welfare check. The drivers are all volunteers, and we can always use more volunteers. They go out, they take the food, they check on the people, they develop relationships. We’ve got some drivers that have been driving 25 years.”

Volunteer schedules are flexible and can range from once a month to multiple days per week, depending on individual availability. Warren County Nutrition says volunteers are especially helpful during winter months and holiday periods.

The program employs nine staff members and serves hundreds of clients each month across Warren County. Those interested in volunteering can contact Warren County Nutrition at 515-961-1155 or warrencountyia.gov to learn more.
