The Newton Police Department wants to remind downtown business and property owners of their responsibilities under the city’s snow removal ordinance.

Per the ordinance, sidewalks adjacent to properties must be cleared within 24 hours after snowfall ends, and snow should not be moved into the street. Snow moved into the street after the city has plowed can create hazards and slow cleanup efforts. Failure to remove snow on time will result in the city clearing it at the owner’s expense, including a $50 abatement fee and a $150 administrative fee. After three or more violations in a season, municipal infractions may be issued, requiring court appearances and additional fines. The city may use a summary abatement process to quickly clear sidewalks before snow hauling begins, and chronic violators could face court action.
