
In a continuation of the series on Today’s Lely Radio Sports Page, our sports team looks back at a special year for the Newton Cardinals.
Some of the top moments from 2025 include:
– On February 15th, Finn Martin became a three-time state swimming champion after winning two championships at the state swim meet in Iowa City.
– On February 15th, at the Class 3A District Meet in Carlisle, four non-senior Cardinal wrestlers advanced to the State Wrestling Tournament.
– Senior Cade Bauer set a school record for made 3-point shots during the Cardinals boys basketball team’s first round substate game at home against Boone on February 24th.
– In the Cardinals’ second match of their own April 19th Invitational at H.A. Lynn Stadium, Sophia Coady tied a school record for goals in a game with six, as the Cardinals rolled to a 9-0 win over Benton.
– The boys golf team advancing to the District Meet on Wednesday, May 14th.
– That same day, senior boys tennis player Ethan Valtman finished as the runner-up in the singles bracket, earning him one of the sixteen qualifying spots at the State Tournament.
– The Cardinal Boys Track and Field team won the Class 3A team state title on May 24th.
– Newton XC runner Alexis Sorensen earned a spot at the state XC meet in October
– Eight NCMP Aquagirls competed in five individual events at the 2025 state meet, placing 13th as a team out of 30 regardless of class
– The special year for Newton was capped at the end of this fall as the Cardinal Football team won the district championship, and rode that momentum to their first UNI Dome trip in over 30 years.
