Newton Mayor Randy Ervin says expanding housing options will be one of his first major priorities as the city looks toward growth in 2026.
Newton has maintained a stable population in recent years, even as many similar-sized Iowa communities have declined. Ervin says that stability creates both opportunity and pressure, particularly when it comes to making sure people who work in Newton are also able to live in the community.
As the city plans for future industrial and commercial growth, Ervin says housing availability must keep pace. He points to recent discussions with developers and economic development leaders as signs that progress could begin soon. Ervin tells KRLS News he is considering all classes.
“My main project coming out of the gate is going to be housing in the city of Newton… we need something in every price category.”
Ervin says the city is exploring a mix of housing options, including single-family homes, duplexes, condominiums, and other multi-family developments. He notes that while newer housing has been added in recent years, gaps remain for workers and families seeking more affordable options.
The mayor says those efforts will be coordinated with broader plans for city growth, including infrastructure improvements and long-term economic development, as Newton prepares for what he calls an important period of opportunity heading into 2026.
