The Newton boys and girls basketball teams play their first Little Hawkeye Conference games of 2026 at Pella Christian tonight, while the Cardinal wrestling teams will be competing at Newton High School.

The Newton basketball teams are both returning to action after wins Friday night at Des Moines Hoover. The Cardinal boys are three and four, and hope to capture their first conference win. Head coach Jason Carter says to beat the Eagles on their home floor will require good ball movement, shooting a high percentage, and disrupting their offense.

“We have struggled against them offensively at times in the past. So we have to get them out of their comfort zone as much as we can.”

The Newton girls also hope to get their first Little Hawkeye Conference win. They are 0-3 in conference games and 4-4 overall. Head coach Jake Bennett hopes to see consistency after the girls played good team basketball and moved the ball really well against Hoover Friday night.

“When we can do that, there are some real opportunities for us to play well against good basketball teams.”

You can hear the Cardinal basketball teams take on Pella Christian on KRLS3 or 92.1 KRLS, with pregame coverage at 5:45 p.m.

Tonight’s home wrestling meet begins at 5:00 p.m. at Newton High School. The Newton boys will wrestle Oskaloosa and Cedar Rapids Kennedy, while the girls will just go up against the Indians. Both Cardinal squads haven’t wrestled since December 20th.
