Jasper County is going to receive approximately $48,000 from the Iowa Department of Transportation for use of county highways in the summer of 2027, while construction occurs on State Highways 14 and 224. Jasper County Engineer Michael Frietsch says most of that money is related to a project on the northwest edge of Newton.
“They are going to redo the intersection of Iowa Highway 14 and North 23rd Avenue West in 2027. It will be bid out this year. They are going to pay us for the detour. They are going to use County Highway T-12 and pay us between $37,000 and $38,000.
Frietsch says detour payments are based on a formula in the State Code. The Highway 14 detour is estimated to be in place from April 1st through November 15th of next year. The other payment, which Frietsch says will be about $8,000, will be for use of County Highways F-27, T-38, and F-17. Those highways make up the detour route for a box culvert replacement project on Iowa Highway 224 just south of North 75th Avenue East. The State Department of Transportation projects that work will take place from April 1st to July 1st, 2027.
